司马承祯，洛州温人。
新唐书卷一百九十六 列传第一百二十一：
司马承祯，字子微，洛州温人。事潘师正，传辟谷道引术，无不通。师正异之，曰："我得陶隐居正一法，逮而四世矣。"因辞去，遍游名山，庐天台不出。武后尝召之，未几，去。睿宗复命其兄承祎就起之。既至，引入中掖廷问其术，对曰："为道日损，损之又损，以至于无为。夫心目所知见，每损之尚不能已，况攻异端而增智虑哉？"帝曰："治身则尔，治国若何？"对曰："国犹身也，故游心于淡，合气于漠，与物自然而无私焉，而天下治。"帝嗟味曰："广成之言也！"锡宝琴、霞纹帔，还之。
开元中，再被召至都，玄宗诏于王屋山置坛室以居。善篆、隶，帝命以三体写《老子》，刊正文句。又命玉真公主及光禄卿韦縚至所居，按金箓７设祠，厚赐焉。卒，年八十九，赠银青光禄大夫，谥贞一先生，亲文其碑。
