司马天助，自云司马德宗骠骑将军元显之子。刘裕自立，乃来归阙。除平东将军、青徐二州刺史，东海公。天助招率义士，欲袭裕东平、济北二郡及城戍，又破裕将闾万龄军，前后多所虏获。拜侍中、都督青徐兖三州诸军事、征东将军、青兖二州刺史，公如故。真君三年，与司马文思等南讨。还，又从驾北征。在阵殁。
子元伯，字归都。袭爵，后降温县子。太和中，为建威将军，泰山太守。
