新唐书卷一百六十三 列传第八十八：
马总，字会元，系出扶风。少孤窭，不妄交游。贞元中，辟署滑州姚南仲幕府，监军薛盈珍诬南仲不法，总坐贬泉州别驾。盈珍入用事，福建观察使柳冕希旨欲诛之，会刺史穆赞保护，乃免。徙恩王傅。
元和中，以虔州刺史迁安南都护，廉清不挠，用儒术教其俗，政事嘉美，獠夷安之。建二铜柱于汉故处，镵著唐德，以明伏波之裔。徙桂管经略观察使，入为刑部侍郎。十二年，兼御史大夫，副裴度宣慰淮西。吴元济禽，为彰义节度留后。蔡人习伪恶，相掉讦，犷戾有夷貊风。总为设教令，明赏罚，磨治洗汰，其俗一变。始奏改彰义为淮西，寻擢拜淮西节度使，徙忠武，改华州防御、镇国军使。李师道平，析郓、曹、濮等为一道，除总节度，赐号天平军。
长庆初，刘总上幽、镇地，诏总徙天平，而召揔还，将大用之。会总卒，穆宗以郓人附赖总，复诏还镇。二年，检校尚书左仆射，入为户部尚书。总笃学，虽吏事倥偬，书不去前，论著颇多。卒，赠右仆射，谥曰懿。
