清史稿卷五百一 列传二百八十八：
祖禹，字复初。柔谦精於史学，尝谓：“明一统志於战守攻取之要，类皆不详山川，条列又复割裂失伦，源流不备。”祖禹承其志，撰读史方舆纪要一百三十卷，凡职方、广舆诸书，承譌袭谬，皆为駮正。详於山川险易，及古今战守成败之迹，而景物名胜皆在所略。创稿时年二十九，及成书，年五十矣。宁都魏禧见之，叹曰：“此数千百年绝无仅有之书也！”以其书与梅文鼎历算全书、李清南北史合钞称三大奇书。祖禹与禧为金石交，禧客死，祖禹经纪其丧。徐乾学奉敕修一统志，延致祖禹，将荐起之，力乱罢。后终於家。
