宋史卷二百七十八 列传第三十七：
简夫字太简，隐居不仕。康定中，枢密使杜衍荐之，召见，以秘书省校书郎签书秦州观察判官。公事既罢，居长安，自以处士起，不复肯随众调官，多为岐路求辟荐。时三白渠久废，京兆府遂荐简夫治渠事。先时，治渠岁役六县民四十日，用梢木数百万，而水不足。简夫用三十日，梢木比旧三之一，而水有余。知坊州，徙简州，用张方平荐，知雅州。
既而辰州蛮酋彭仕羲内寇，三司副使李参、侍御史朱处约安抚不能定，继命简夫往。至则督诸将进兵，筑明溪上、下二砦，据其险要，拓取故省地石马崖五百余里。仕羲内附。擢三司盐铁判官，以疾，知虢、同二州，累迁尚书职方员外郎，卒。录其子寿臣为郊社斋郎。
简夫始起隐者，出入乘牛，冠铁冠，自号"山长"。关中用兵，以口舌捭阖公卿。既仕，自奉稍骄侈，驺御服饰，顿忘其旧，里闾指笑之曰："牛及铁冠安在？"
