郝玼者，泾原之戍将也。贞元中，为临泾镇将，勇敢无敌，声振虏庭。玼以临泾地居险要，当虏要冲，白其帅曰："临泾草木丰茂，宜畜牧，西蕃入寇，每屯其地，请完垒益军，以折虏之入寇。"前帅不从。及段佐节制泾原，深然其策。元和三年，佐请筑临泾城，朝廷从之。仍以为行凉州，诏玼为刺史以戍之。自此西蕃入寇，不过临泾。
玼出自行间，前无坚敌。在边三十年，每战得蕃俘，必刳剔而归其尸，蕃人畏之如神。赞普下令国人曰："有生得郝玼者，赏之以等身金。"蕃中儿啼者，呼玼名以怖之。十三年，检校左散骑常侍、渭州刺史、御史大夫，充泾原行营节度、平凉镇遏都知兵马使，封保定郡王。吐蕃畏其威，纲纪欲图之，朝廷虑失骁将，移授庆州刺史，竟终牖下。
