史记卷一百二十二 酷吏列传第六十二：
赵禹者，斄人。以佐史补中都官，用廉为令史，事太尉亚夫。亚夫为丞相，禹为丞相史，府中皆称其廉平。然亚夫弗任，曰：「极知禹无害，然文深，不可以居大府。」今上时，禹以刀笔吏积劳，稍迁为御史。上以为能，至太中大夫。与张汤论定诸律令，作见知，吏传得相监司。用法益刻，盖自此始。
