贺上林，江苏丹阳人。父天叙，以事忤知县，系狱，将杀之。上林年十八，谋脱父。闻巡抚将上官，涉江溯淮，迎舟呼，驺从呵之，不得前，乃发愤投水，发没数寸，复跃起大呼。巡抚见，令救，已死，检其衣，得白父冤系状。巡抚按部黜知县，释天叙出狱，乡人为立贺孝子祠。
