清史稿卷四百八十六 列传二百七十三：
谭莹，字玉生，南海人。弱冠应县试，总督阮元游山寺，见莹题壁诗，惊赏，告县令曰：“邑有才人，勿失之！”令问姓名，不答。已而得所为赋以告元，元曰：“是矣。”逾年，元开学海堂课士，以莹及侯康、仪克中、熊景星、黄子高为学长。莹性强记，述往事，虽久远，时日不失。博考粤中文献，友人伍崇曜富於赀，为汇刻之，曰岭南遗书五十九种，曰粤十三家集，曰楚南耆旧遗诗，益扩之为粤雅堂丛书。莹为学长三十年，英彦多出其门。道光二十四年，举於乡，官化州训导。久之，迁琼州教授，加中书衔。少与侯康等交莫逆，晚岁陈澧与之齐名。著乐志堂集。
