南史卷十九 列传第九：
子惠连，年十岁能属文，族兄灵运加赏之，云"每有篇章，对惠连辄得佳语"。尝于永嘉西堂思诗，竟日不就，忽梦见惠连，即得"池塘生春草"，大以为工。常云"此语有神功，非吾语也"。本州辟主簿，不就。惠连先爱幸会稽郡吏杜德灵，及居父忧，赠以五言诗十余首，"乘流遵归路"诸篇是也。坐废不豫荣位。尚书仆射殷景仁爱其才，言次白文帝，言"臣小儿时便见此文，而论者云是惠连，其实非也"。文帝曰："若此便应通之。"元嘉七年，方为司徒彭城王义康法曹行参军。义康修东府城，城堑中得古冢，为之改葬，使惠连为祭文，留信待成，其文甚美。又为《雪赋》，以高丽见奇。灵运见其新文，每曰"张华重生，不能易也"。文章并行于世，年三十七卒。既早亡，轻薄多尤累，故官不显。无子。惠连弟惠宣，位临川太守。
