袁枚，钱塘人。
清史稿卷四百八十五 列传二百七十二：
袁枚，字子才，钱塘人。幼有异禀。年十二，补县学生。弱冠，省叔父广西抚幕，巡抚金鉷见而异之，试以铜鼓赋，立就，甚瑰丽。会开博学鸿词科，遂疏荐之。时海内举者二百馀人，枚年最少，试报罢。乾隆四年，成进士，选庶吉士。改知县江南，历溧水、江浦、沭阳，调剧江宁。时尹继善为总督，知枚才，枚亦遇事尽其能。市人至以所判事作歌曲刻行四方。枚不以吏能自喜，既而引疾家居。再起发陕西，丁父忧归，遂牒请养母。卜筑江宁小仓山，号随园，崇饰池馆，自是优游其中者五十年。时出游佳山水，终不复仕。尽其才以为文辞诗歌，名流造请无虚日，诙谐詄荡，人人意满。后生少年一言之美，称之不容口。笃於友谊，编修程晋芳死，举借券五千金焚之，且恤其孤焉。
天才颖异。论诗主抒写性灵，他人意所欲出，不达者悉为达之。士多效其体。著随园集，凡三十馀种。上自公卿下至市井负贩，皆知其名。海外琉球有来求其书者。然枚喜声色，其所作亦颇以滑易获世讥云。卒，年八十二。
