袁敬，字子恭，陈郡阳夏人也。祖顗，宋侍中、吏部尚书、雍州刺史。父昂，梁侍中、司空，谥穆公。敬纯孝有风格，幼便笃学，老而无倦。释褐秘书郎，累迁太子舍人、洗马、中舍人。江陵沦覆，流寓岭表。高祖受禅，敬在广州，依欧阳頠。及頠卒，其子纥据州，将有异志，敬累谏纥，为陈逆顺之理，言甚切至，纥终不从。高宗即位，遣章昭达率众讨纥，纥将败之时，恨不纳敬言。朝廷义之，其年徵为太子中庶子、通直散骑常侍。俄转司徒左长史。寻迁左民尚书，转都官尚书，领豫州大中正。累迁太常卿、散骑常侍、金紫光禄大夫，加特进。至德三年卒，时年七十九，赠左光禄大夫，谥曰靖德。子元友嗣。弟泌自有传。兄子枢。
