旧唐书卷一百六十一 列传第一百一十一：
董重质，本淮西牙将，吴少诚之子婿也。性勇悍，识军机，善用兵。及元济拒命，重质又为谋主，领大军当王师，连岁不拔，皆重质之谋也。元和十二年，宰相裴度督兵淮西，至郾城，元济乃悉发左右及守城之卒，委重质而拒度。时李愬乘虚入蔡。既擒元济，重质之家在蔡，愬乃安恤之，仍使其子持书礼以召重质。重质见其子，知城已陷，及元济囚窘之状，乃慨然以单骑归愬，白衣叩伏。愬揖登阶，以宾礼与之食。宪宗欲杀之，愬奏许以不死而来降，请免之，且乞于本军驱使。于是，贬春州司户参军。
明年，转太子少詹事，委武宁军收管驱使，仍加金紫。十五年，征入，授左神武军将军，知军事，兼御史中丞。仍赐金帛，与有功者等。寻授盐州刺史，又迁左右神策及诸道剑南西川行营节度使、检校左散骑常侍。太和四年，又转夏绥银宥节度使。五年，就加检校工部尚书。重质训兵立法，羌戎畏服。八年八月卒，赠尚书右仆射。
