罗研，字深微，少有材辩。元起平蜀，辟为主簿，后为信安令。故事置观农谒者，围桑度田，劳扰百姓。研请除其弊，帝从之。鄱阳忠烈王恢临蜀，闻其名，请为别驾。及西昌侯藻重为刺史，州人为之惧，研举止自若。侯谓曰："非我无以容卿，非卿无以事我。"齐苟儿之役，临汝侯嘲之曰："卿蜀人乐祸贪乱，一至于此。"对曰："蜀中积弊，实非一朝。百家为村，不过数家有食，穷迫之人，什有八九，束缚之使，旬有二三。贪乱乐祸，无足多怪。若令家畜五母之鸡，一母之豕，床上有百钱布被，甑中有数升麦饭，虽苏、张巧说于前，韩、白按剑于后，将不能使一夫为盗，况贪乱乎？"
大通二年，为散骑侍郎。嗣王范将西，忠烈王恢谓曰："吾昔在蜀，每事委罗研，汝遵而勿失。"范至，复以为别驾，升堂拜母，蜀人荣之。数年卒官。蜀士以文达者，唯研与同郡李膺。
