蕴，字彦深，彧兄子也。父楷，太中大夫。楷人才凡劣，故蕴不为群从所礼，常怀耻慨。家贫，为广德令。明帝即位，四方叛逆，欲以将领自奋，每抚刀曰："龙泉太阿，汝知我者。"叔父景文常诫之曰："阿答，汝灭我门户。"蕴曰："答与童乌贵贱异。"童乌，绚小字，答，蕴小字也。及事宁，封吉阳男。历晋陵、义兴太守，所莅并贪纵。后为给事黄门侍郎。桂阳之逼，王道隆为乱兵所杀，蕴力战，重创御沟侧，或扶以免。事平，抚军长史褚澄为吴郡太守，司徒左长史萧惠开明言于朝曰："褚澄开城以纳贼，更为股肱大郡，王蕴被甲死战，弃而不收，赏罚如此，何忧不乱！"褚彦回惭，乃议用蕴为湘州刺史。及齐高帝辅政，蕴与沈攸之连谋，事败，斩于秣陵市。
