清史稿卷四百九十 列传二百七十七：
潘锦芳，湖州人。城围久，赵景贤以江苏巡抚驻军上海，作血书乞援，募能犯围出者。锦芳时老病，家亦卖酒小康，独激於义愤，请行，辗转得达。议以松江提督曾秉忠率水师绝太湖而西，为外内合攻计。湖贾之在上海者，且聚赀钜万饷之。行有日矣，有尼之者，中变，锦芳流涕曰：“老夫出城时，粮将罄矣。兵一日两粥，民食草根树皮，空巷敝庐，死亡枕藉。其幸存者，数老夫之行，旦暮待援，惧不相及。城外贼如麻，登高叫呼，兵则凭堞应答，岌岌将为变。乡人之贾於此者，念在围亲属，其愁迫何如？独恨水师无翼而飞耳。彼尼之者，何不仁乎？呜呼！吾不复见赵公矣。”抵案大呼，呕血以死。
