之善，育龙从孙，仍籍甘肃靖远。初从育龙征噶尔丹。昭莫多之役，力战中枪，诏来京师医治。四十二年，上幸西安，之善迎谒临潼，授蓝翎侍卫，赐孔雀翎。补肃州镇标游击。策妄阿喇布坦以二千人侵哈密，之善率兵二百击败之。上嘉其勇，超擢陕西潼关副将。从靖逆将军富宁安击准噶尔於乌鲁木齐，多俘获。雍正初，青海台吉罗卜藏丹津叛，侵布隆吉尔，与参将孙继宗引兵夹击，斩获无算。擢四川川北总兵，移镇陕西西安。之善以边外辽阔，当设卡路杜窥伺，乃遣兵於沙州西路伊逊察罕齐老图及察罕乌苏诺尔分路侦御。并以住牧熟夷数百户，分置诸要隘，诇敌情，督修西安城及沙州五堡，以二千四百户屯田沙州，筹牛种，建房舍。疏闻，上深嘉之，命署固原提督。谕曰：“此军乃汝叔祖潘育龙所整理，为天下第一营伍，流风馀韵，至今可观。若不能企及，何颜以对朕耶？”寻以目眚解任。十一年，卒。
