沈初，浙江平湖人。
清史稿卷三百五十一 列传一百三十八：
沈初，字景初，浙江平湖人。少有异禀，读书目数行下，同郡钱陈群称为异才。乾隆二十七年，南巡，召试，赐举人，授内阁中书。明年，成一甲第三名进士，授编修。三十二年，直懋勤殿，合写经为皇太后祝釐。逾年，大考翰詹，以直内廷未与试，诏褒初学问优美，特晋一秩，擢侍讲。三十六年，直南书房，督河南学政，未赴任，丁祖母承重忧。服阕，迁右庶子。累擢礼部侍郎，督福建学政。遭本生父忧，服阕，起兵部侍郎。寻以母病乞归终养。后起故官，督顺天学政，调江苏。任满回京，调吏部，又督江西学政。
初以文学受知，历充四库全书馆、三通馆副总裁，续编石渠宝笈、秘殿珠林，校勘太学石经。嘉庆元年，与千叟宴，充会试知贡举。擢左都御史，授军机大臣，迁兵部尚书，历吏、户二部。四年，以老罢枢务，免直内廷，充实录馆副总裁。未几卒，谥文恪，祀贤良祠。
