旧唐书卷一百八十三 列传第一百三十三：
懿宗，则天伯父士逸之孙也。父元忠，高宗时仕至仓部郎中。天授年，封士逸为蜀王，懿宗封为河内郡王，历迁洛州长史、左金吾卫大将军。万岁通天年中，契丹贼帅孙万荣寇河北，命懿宗为大总管讨之。军次赵州，用闻贼将至冀州，懿宗惧，便欲弃军而遁。人或谓曰："贼众极多，然其军无辎重，以抄掠为资，若按兵以守，势必离散，因而击之。可有大功也。"懿宗不听，遂退据相州，时人嗤其怯懦。由是贼众进屠赵州而去。寻又令懿宗安抚河北诸州。
先是，百姓有胁从贼众，后得归来者。懿宗以为同反，总杀之。仍生刳取其胆，后行刑，流血盈前，言笑自若。初。孙万荣别帅何阿小攻陷冀州，亦多屠害士女。至是，时人号懿宗与阿小为两何，为之语曰："唯此两何，杀人最多。"懿宗又自天授已来，尝受中旨，推鞫制狱，王公大臣，多被陷成其罪，时人以为周兴、来俊臣之亚焉。神龙初，随例降爵，封耿国公，累转怀州刺史，寻卒。
