方元衡，安徽桐城人。
清史稿卷四百九十九 列传二百八十六：
方元衡，字莘田，安徽桐城人。以贡生官光禄寺署正。父病失明，晨夕调护，厕牏必躬亲之，终亲之身不稍怠。推产给弟，惟笔耕以奉甘旨。年五十，依母怀如婴儿。居丧不宴笑，不居内，日所行必告於主，葬则庐墓侧，岁时祭，必哀戚尽礼。俗惑於风水，常停柩久不葬，请设劝葬局，限期督葬，无后者则购地代葬之，先后逾五万具。复设采访局，采访全省节孝贞烈，历二十年，汇请得旌者凡十馀万人。建总祠总坊於省会，有司春秋致祭。著有续心学宗、孝经浅註。卒后，皖人上其孝义行，特赠五品卿。
