明史卷二百五十一 列传第一百三十九：
瑜子之陶，年少有干略。李自成陷宜城，瑜父民忠骂贼而死。之陶被获，用为兵政府从事，寻以本府侍郎守襄阳。襄阳尹牛佺，贼相金星子，其倚任不如也。之陶以蜡丸书贻传庭曰：“督师与之战，吾诡言左镇兵大至，摇其心，彼必返顾。督师击其后，吾从中起，贼可灭也。”传庭大喜，报书如其言，为贼逻者所得。传庭恃内应，连营前进，之陶果举火，报左兵大至。自成验得其诈，召而示以传庭书，责其负己。之陶大骂曰：“吾恨不斩汝万段，岂从汝反耶！”贼怒，支解之。
