晋书卷九十一 列传第六十一：
徐苗，字叔胄，高密淳于人也。累世相承，皆以博士为郡守。曾祖华，有至行。尝宿亭舍，夜有神人告之"亭欲崩"，遽出，得免。祖邵，为魏尚书郎，以廉直见称。苗少家贫，昼执锄耒，夜则吟诵。弱冠，与弟贾就博士济南宋钧受业，遂为儒宗。作《五经同异评》，又依道家著《玄微论》，前后所造数万言，皆有义味。性抗烈，轻财贵义，兼有知人之鉴。弟患口痈，脓溃，苗为吮之。其兄弟皆早亡，抚养孤遗，慈爱闻于州里，田宅奴婢尽推与之。乡邻有死者，便辍耕助营棺椁，门生亡于家，即敛于讲堂。其行己纯至，类皆如此。远近咸归其义，师其行焉。郡察孝廉，州辟从事、治中、别驾、举异行，公府五辟博士，再征，并不就。武惠时计吏至台，帝辄访其安不。永宁二年卒，遗命濯巾浣衣，榆棺杂砖，露车载尸，苇席瓦器而已。
