清史稿卷三百九十九 列传一百八十六：
张锡庚，字星白，江苏丹徒人，大学士玉书裔孙。道光十六年二甲一名进士，选庶吉士，授编修。迁御史，擢顺天府丞，丁父忧，服阕，补原官。疏论绿营冒滥顶名及缉捕诸弊，诏下其疏於各直省，实力整顿。又疏言殿试贡士不限字数，听其发抒，删去颂辞，下部议行。历太仆寺卿、左副都御史。
咸丰八年，督浙江学政，擢刑部侍郎，仍留学政任。十年，杭州陷而旋复，锡庚助城守，其子恩然率家属自焚，锡庚以闻，予旌恤。团练大臣王履谦劾巡抚王有龄筹饷按缺派捐，命锡庚访按。锡庚以有龄一月内更易州县二十馀员，非政体，请予处分，从之。十一年，任满，代者未至，杭州复被围，锡庚同守城。城陷，或劝之去，锡庚曰：“吾大臣也，不可辱国！”遂自缢，贼称其忠，为具棺敛。赠尚书衔，予骑都尉兼云骑尉世职，祀浙江昭忠祠，谥文贞。
