宋史卷二百九十四 列传第五十三：
张揆字贯之，其先范阳人，后徙齐州。擢进士第，历北海县尉，改大理寺丞。以疾解官，十年不出户。读《易》，因通扬雄《太玄经》。陈执中安抚京东，荐揆经明行淳，召为国子监直讲，徙诸王府侍讲。以尚书度支员外郎直史馆、荆王府记室参军。府罢，权三司户部判官。上所著《太玄集解》数万言。诏对迩英阁，令揲耆，得断首，且言："断首准《易》之《》，盖以阳刚决阴柔，君子进、小人退之象。"仁宗悦。擢天章阁待制兼侍读，累迁右谏议大夫，进龙图阁直学士、给事中、判太常寺。一日，进读汉《马后传》。至服大练、抑止外家，因言："今妃族太盛，不可不裁损，使保其家。"帝嘉纳之。诏改王溥谥，有议欲为文忠者，揆曰："溥，周之宰相，国亡不能死，安得为忠？"乃谥为文康。加翰林侍读学士、知审刑院，出知齐州。卒，赠尚书礼部侍郎。
揆性刚狷少容，阔于世务，然好读书，老而不倦。与弟掞相友爱，掞，为龙图阁直学士。
