旧唐书卷一百八十九上 列传第一百三十九：
张后胤，苏州昆山人也。父中，有儒学，隋汉王谅出牧并州，引为博士。后胤从父在并州，以学行见称。时高祖镇太原，引居宾馆。太宗就受《春秋左氏传》。武德中，累除燕王谘议参军。
贞观中，后胤上言："陛下昔在太原，问臣：'隋氏运终，何族当得天下？'臣奉对：'李姓必得。公家德业，天下系心，若于此首谋，长驱关右，以图帝业，孰不幸赖！'此实微臣早识天命。"太宗曰："此事并记之耳。"因诏入赐宴，言及平昔，从容谓曰："今弟子何如？"后胤对曰："昔孔子领徒三千，达者无子男之位。臣翼赞一人，为万乘主，计臣功逾于先圣。"太宗甚悦，赐良马五匹，拜燕王府司马。迁国子祭酒，转散骑常侍。
永徽初，请致仕，加金紫光禄大夫，给赐并同职事。卒，赠礼部侍郎，陪葬昭陵。
