孟郊者，少隐于嵩山，称处士。李翱分司洛中，与之游。荐于留守郑余庆，辟为宾佐。性孤僻寡合，韩愈一见以为忘形之契，常称其字曰东野，与之唱和于文酒之间。郑余庆镇兴元，又奏为从事，辟书下而卒。余庆给钱数万葬送，赡给其妻子者累年。
