随字君正，颇好儒术，多从士大夫游。以父荫为茶酒班殿侍，迁右班殿直。仁宗在东宫，为率府副率兼春坊谒者。及即位，除内殿承制、阁门祗候，累迁西上阁门使，出为天雄军兵马钤辖。以母疾召还，领三班院，再迁四方馆使、营州刺史。出知卫州，真拜韶州团练使。徙邠州，迁泰州防御使。
元昊反，为鄜延路副都总管。随本名元亨，与元昊有嫌，因奏改焉。寻徙环庆路，未几，复还鄜延。元昊为书及锦袍、银带投境上，以遗金明李士彬，且约与同叛。候人得之，诸将皆疑士彬，独随曰："此行间尔。士彬与羌世仇，若有私约，通赠遗，岂使众知邪？"乃召士彬与饮，厚抚之。士彬感泣，后数日，果击贼，斩首获羊马自效。
及守赟知枢密院事，除耀州观察使、知亳州。刘平、石元孙败，以随知河中府。守赟经略安抚陕西，留领会灵观事。守赟还，复为陕西副都总管兼缘边招讨副使。帝曰："朝廷方以边事委卿，卿毋以父在机密为嫌。"时随已病，次陕州，卒。赠昭信军节度使，谥庄恪。随在边陲无多战功，然慎重少过。
