吕南公，建昌南城人。
宋史卷四百四十四 列传第二百三：
吕南公，字次儒，建昌南城人。于书无所不读，于文不肯缀缉陈言。熙宁中，士方推崇马融、王肃、许慎之业，剽掠补拆临摹之艺大行，南公度不能逐时好，一试礼闱不偶，退筑室灌园，不复以进取为意。益著书，且借史笔以褒善贬恶，遂以"衮斧"名所居斋。尝谓士必不得已于言，则文不可以不工，盖意有余而文不足，则如吃人之辨讼，必未始不虚，理未始不直，然而或屈者，无助于辞而已。观书契以来，特立之士，未有不善于文者。士无志于立则已，必有志焉，则文何可以卑贱而为之？故毅然尽心，思欲与古人并。
元祐初，立十科荐士，中书舍人曾肇上疏，称其读书为文，不事俗学，安贫守道，志希古人，堪充师表科，一时廷臣亦多称之。议欲命以官，未及而卒。遗文曰《灌园先生集》，传于世。
