刘遇，沧州清池人。少魁梧有膂力。周祖镇大名，隶帐下。广顺初，补控鹤都头，改副指挥使。宋初，迁御马直指挥使，俄领汉州刺史，改领眉州。累迁控鹤右厢都指挥使、领琼州团练使。从征太原，以功迁虎捷右厢，改领蔚州防御使。开宝六年，转侍卫步军都虞候、领洮州观察使。征江南，领步军战棹都指挥使。时吴兵三万屯皖口，遇会诸路兵破之，擒其将朱令赟、王晖等，获戎器数万，金陵以平，录功加领大同军节度。车驾雩祀西洛，命率禁卫以从。
太平兴国二年，出为彰信军节度。四年，征太原，与史珪攻城北面，平之。进攻范阳，师还，坐所部失律，责授宿州观察使。五年，从幸大名，复保静军节度、幽州行营都部署，护筑保州、威虏、静戎、平塞、长城五城。八年，徙镇滑州。晨兴方对客，足有灸疮痛，其医谓火毒不去，故痛不止。遇即解衣，取刀割疮至骨，曰："火毒去矣。"谈笑如常时，旬余乃差。遇性淳谨，待士有礼，尤善射，太宗待之甚厚。雍熙二年，卒，年六十六，赠侍中，归葬京师。
