旧唐书卷一百八十七下 列传第一百三十七：
刘敦儒，开元朝史官左散骑常侍子玄之孙。敦儒母有心疾，非日鞭人不安，子弟仆使，不胜其苦，皆逃遁他处，唯敦儒侍养不息，体常流血。及母亡，居丧毁瘠骨立，洛中谓之刘孝子。
元和中，东都留守权德舆具奏其至行，诏曰："孝子刘敦儒，生于儒门，禀此至性。王祥笃行，起孝敬而不移；曾参养志，积岁年而罔怠。用弘劝奖，而服官常，分曹洛师，俾遂私志。可左龙武军兵曹参军，分司东都。"
