侯义，应天府楚丘人。贫无产，佣田以事母。里人有葬其亲而遽返者，义母过其冢，泣谓义曰："我死，其若是乎！"义乃感激自誓而不欲言，但慰其母曰："勿悲，义必不尔。"咸平中，母卒，义力自办葬，不掩坟圹，昼则负土筑坟，夜则恸哭柩侧。妻子困匮不给，田主曹氏哀怜之，资以餱粮。逾年，坟间瓜异蒂、木连理，又有巨蛇绕其侧不暴物，野鸽飞而不去。尝遇盗劫其衣服，既而知是义物，悉还之。
