明史卷二百九十三 列传第一百八十一：
何燮，字中理，晋江人。举于乡。崇祯中，知亳州。州自八年后，寇贼交横，益以饥馑，民死徙过半。燮尽心拊循，营战守具甚备。未几，山东、河南土寇迭至，燮战卢家庙，生擒贼魁二人，刳其肠示众，抚降者数千人。十五年二月，李自成陷河南，居民望风逃窜，城空不能守。贼至，执燮欲降之，骂不屈，断足剖胸而死，悬首市上三日，耳鼻犹动。贼遂纵兵四出，霍丘、灵璧、盱眙皆陷。
霍丘，八年春尝陷，至是再陷。知县左相申率兵巷战，力屈死之。巡检吴姓者，斗死。灵璧知县唐良锐，全州举人。城陷，抗骂死。盱眙，先被陷，贼至，士民悉走，独主簿胡渊不去。县故无城，渊持戟至龟山寺力斗，殪数人。贼骇欲遁，会马蹶被执，奋骂而死。渊，永年人，起家贡生。
