新唐书卷一百九十五 列传第一百二十：
任敬臣，字希古，棣州人。五岁丧母，哀毁天至。七岁，问父英曰："若何可以报母？"英曰："扬名显亲可也。"乃刻志从学。汝南任处权见其文，惊曰："孔子称颜回之贤，以为弗如也。吾非古人，然见此儿，信不可及。"十六，刺史崔枢欲举秀才，自以学未广，遁去。又三年卒业，举孝廉，授著作局正字。父亡，数殒绝，继母曰："而不胜丧，谓孝可乎？"敬臣更进饘粥。服除，迁秘书郎。休沐，阖门诵书。监虞世南器其人，岁终，书上考，固辞。召为弘文馆学士，俄授越王府西阁祭酒。当代，王再表留，进朝请郎。举制科，擢许王文学。复为弘文馆学士，终太子舍人。
