蒋兴祖，常州宜兴人，之奇之孙也。以荫累调饶州司录。睦州盗起，旁郡皆震，兴祖白州将纠吏卒，绢战具，盗不敢谋。以功迁官，知开封府阳武县。阳武，古博浪沙地，土脉脆恶，大河薄其南。尝积雨泛溢，埽且溃，兴祖躬救护，露宿其上，弥四旬，堤以不坏。治为畿邑最，使者交荐之。靖康初，金兵犯京师，道过县，或劝使走避，兴祖曰："吾世受国恩，当死于是。"与妻子留不去。监兵与贼通，斩以徇。金数百骑来攻，不胜，去。明日师益至，力不敌，死焉，年四十二。妻及长子相继以悸死。诏赠朝散大夫。
